reading and writings from the past and present
yeah turk le clair the artist was a far outer . no doubt about it . yeah i heard he died . in hawaii i heard .
michael bowen the beat artist was in hawaii and he even email me a picture of turk on his death bed . he is the guy who put together the armory show in san francisco that the neo roc mail art show was part of . this was put together by robert rocola and bill gaglione .
and all of them are still around , except turk . now i met turk in san francisco or thereabouts . maybe in uhkia the first time . any funny story . i had lived most of the 70's in asia , doing legal and not so legal things . and one of my mentors TOM BOM from those days in asia was visiting with me at 232 sanchez st. san francisco and my door on the landing was open as tom and i sat upstairs b.s.ing and who walk up the stairs and into the living room turk . and it turns out both of them knew each other in the sixties in new york or texas or both . they had not seen each other in 20 years . from the asia world to the art world and back again and beyond . and carlo also . i always liked the stuff he sent me . the visuals were way cool . and buster cleveland also among the gone . he i knew in person , from many occasions . carlo in never did meet . although cracker jack kid mail artist and now folk singer , i met once when i was on the east coast doing some involuntary sojournism in vermont . i like his music now . the girl in red / her name is mitzi , she was with the underground cartoonist s. clay wilson then . all of those photos are from interdada 84 . or at least around that time . that was when i met all of these mail artists , dadaist , spray paint and stencil artists and all of that . and to think that it started off with the bartender at dicks cafe , rick london the poet and editor . he worked weekends at this bar where artists and taxi drivers and poets painters real estate agents and sailors from norway hung out .
he introduced me to this whole scene that was happening in the edge of the castro district . 1st was s.clay wilson and then dave gieser and the i met mellinda gebbie who did the fresca zizi comic . one of which had a great story about her and wilson that was so intimate , so real . anyway i bought some of her work and some of s.cly wilsons
s. clay wilson underground comic artist and the creator of ' the checkered demon '. i bought some work of his [ that i still have ] and it was off to the races on the collecting and participating scene . recently i have been touch with scott williams the stencil artist from san francisco . he had a show at the track 16 spage in bergamot station , in santa monice i have a store on venice beach these days . for the last 15 years . after i left l.a. packing and crating . home to many lost artist . on venice beach i am named tribal bazaar .
we can be found at this address http://www.tribalbazaar.com/ we do a lot of belly dance shows and travel to india and pakistan to do some of the buying . right now we are thinking of retiring . to india . to the beaches of goa . a days boat ride south of bombay . i can smell the air and think of the menus i have know . and also the hotel rooms i have known . from athen to katmandu and beyond . from greece to laos . and i thought that this would lead to the greece to laos thing at blogger and it did not . so i went to a different blog site and did some more thinking . and earlier today i went and saw an old friend from the 70's in asia . he runs a record and cd and dvd store on ventura blvd. in studio city . anyway were talking about the old days and we decided that we were some of the lucky ones . that we got 10 years of running around europe and asia when we were young and the world was free . or at least it seemed freeer . to us it still is but to some it seems more scary than before all the moves in afghanistan and iraq .
any way we both think that asia and in particular india is a good place to settle down for the last years , howerver many they may be .
on the beach , on the web , and on paper . . .
